BOTANICAL GARDENS IN THE CITY AND WITTUNGA, BLACKWOOD
The Botanical Gardens on North Terrace are always worth a visit but are at their best in Spring before the heat and dry weather of Summer slows growth.
In September, the Bicentenary Glass House is full of lush growth and the Wisteria Arch puts on its annual show.
Giant waterlilies are coming into bloom and the rill adds a sound dimension to a peaceful avenue leading to the Garden Centre and display of scarecrows
Although the lotus flowers are absent, the lakes are fringed with irises, pampas grasses and arum lilies. If you sit quietly you soon begin to notice all the birds butterflies and insects going about their business.
The stunning wisteria arch is always worth a visit in early September but its a little late this year and not quite at its peak when I visited
WITTUNGA
Wittunga is an oasis in the foothills. Planting includes a lot of species from south Africa (similar climate, so grow well here) Lots of leucadendrons and proteas but many native Australian plants too
Plenty of ducks, kookaburras and other birds around and the frogs can be very noisy but apart from the gentle hum of traffic and the occasional goods train, these gardens are so tranquil. A lovely venue for concerts, weddings and family picnics with a childrens' adventure play area near the carpark
